Job Club Thursday

Tonight is mock interview night at job club.  Please come out and support our clients as they tackle interviewing skills.  We love and appreciate community volunteers who can offer new and interesting insights on the interview process.

Clients of the MPRI program should come prepared to have a fun and informative night as our team will cover information on how to answer the felony question.

This event is open to all community members and will be held at Catholic Social Services.  The interviewing will start at 5pm.  We hope to see you there!

How-To Wednesday: Print Attachments

Today we will pick up where we left off about attachments.  A lot of you have been asking how to print off the attachments you open.  Keep in mind that the computers you use may not have the exact same screen as shown in the pictures.  That is okay.  Most computers have the same sort of buttons to get you from online to printed page.

If you still need help please visit the public library for in-depth computer assistance.  Both the Ypsilanti library and the Ann Arbor library offer free classes to the community and you do not have to own a library card or preregister.  You just have to show up for the class.  Click here to go to the Ypsilanti library website or click here to go to the Ann Arbor library website

Remember to patient with yourself if you are still having issues and to always go get the help you need to be successful!

As always, leave a comment if you need help finding more computer classes, or if you have a suggestion for a tutorial that you would like to see on the blog!

Now for the tutorial:

Go ahead and download the attachments (you'll find them at the end of Emily's email...if you have forgotten how to download attachments CLICK HERE for a refresher).

After you have hit OK on the download box the document should open up in word:

Next find the "file" button in Microsoft word (it should be towards the top of the page):

Next find the "print" word under the "file" button:

After you click the "print" button a screen should pop-up that looks like this:

Click on the "print" button (here is a close-up of the "print" button):

Keep checking the printer for your documents.  You should receive some sort of confirmation that your item as printed.

Hitting the Pavement: The Job Leads List

It is Monday morning, and what a beautiful Monday morning it is.  Cold temperatures and a little bit of snow make for a chilly day perfect for cold calling, applying to jobs, and reviewing our latest job leads list.

For those of you new to the blog, our job leads list is a grouping of pre-screened employers who are looking to hire and will consider individuals with a felony back ground.  We send these via email to our MPRI participants first, and then we will post them to the blog later in the day for individuals in the community who have felony backgrounds and are looking for employment.

Emily Smith is also an AmeriCorps*VISTA with the workforce development team.  Every Friday afternoon until early Monday morning she combs her Internet sources (these are the same ones listed in our blog side bar) looking for jobs that she can share with returning citizens to help aid them in their job search.

Please remember that this list is only a starting place.  Finding a job is full-time job, so keep searching beyond what you see here.  Good luck!

*If you are having trouble viewing any of the links please leave me a comment and I will get back to you.*

Weekend Wrap Up

The weekend is finally here!  For a lot of us the weekend is a time of rest and relaxation, but don't forget to spend at least 1 to 3 hours Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on the job hunt.
Remember:  Finding a job is a full-time job.

A lot of employers will take the weekend to post job listings or review applications sent in.  This is also a good time to cold call employers to see if they hire people with a felony background and to check up on applications you have already sent in.

Try to keep in mind that applying for jobs is only half of the battle.  You should always check back with employers in a couple of weeks once you have turned in the application.

Finding a job is a full-time job.  It takes time.  Try to stay positive and good luck!

How-To Wednesday: Downloading Attachments

Every Monday when Emily emails out the job leads list she "attaches" two important documents.  One is our general hiring letter which explains the incentives that we offer to employers, and the other is our job log which is required for participants who are in our housing program.  Here is a little primer about attachments and how to open them just in case you are having trouble.

I've circled in red where the downloads are on the job leads list:

You are going to want to click on the blue download links (I've circled them in red):

Once you click on the download button, you will see this box pop up (circled in red):

A close up of the "ok" button (circled in red):

Once you click on the "OK" button your document should open!

Next week we will look at how to print and save the attachments you've opened.  Stay tuned next week.
